I am honored to have been commissioned to do the official portrait of Bishop Richard Allen, black america’s “Apostle of Freedom” referred to by some. The portrait is a permanent collection archived with the written history of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Schomburg Center for Research of Black Culture (NY Public Library) located in Harlem NY.
Bishop Richard Allen is one of the founding fathers of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1787(first known as”The Free African Society”). Bishop Allen and the AME Church with the privilege, duty and challenge of the Church of Jesus Christ to engage itself in the highest calling of salvation, immediately became the center of Black institutional life, supporting schools, opposing the Colonization Society and petitioning legislatures for an end to slavery. Allen with the Free African Society who was acclaimed as the first national black leader, had as its primary purpose, the buying of enslaved Africans to set them legally free.
The historical, nostalgia lithograph reproduction from the original portrait of Bishop Richard Allen is 8.5″ x 12″ printed on 100 lb. Strathmore acid free cover stock with 1 1/2″ border. Signed and numbered by the artist.
